Tonight was pretty much one of the more amazing experiences of my life. But I'll get to that later.
I think Wednesday or Thursday I hung out with Mel for a bit and bought her ice cream.
Friday I came back from my half-day of work and took a nap so I could stay out and do stuff all night. But Shaun couldn't hang out because he was randomly in Virginia, so I just watched Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind at Caroline's. I like that movie alot.
Saturday Mel called me to come with her to get her nose pierced at Il Batchio's, where she came with me to get my labret pierced two years ago. She picked me up and Nell was with her too. We went there, got her nose pierced, then went to her house. We hung out in her room for a few hours. I met her new cat, who grew to love me. She has a really comfortable bed. I had a good time. She drove me back to my house so I could go to the movies with Amanda and Caroline. But caroline didn't feel like seeing a movie now and Amanda went to do something, so I met Caroline, Lindsay and Rachel Pinkstone at Pasariello's. Hung out, got coffee at Starbucks, walked back to Pasarello's and ran into Roger Drew's naked ass and Chrissy Junior. Shot the shit with them for an hour and told Roger about 17 times that I'm moving in with him. I'm pretty tempted to try it just to see what would happen. After that we hung out at Rachel's apartment and played with her kitten. It was a day full of kittens.
Sunday, I picked up Shaun and we went to Tunes so he could sell the 37 or so CDs he got from Radiotakeover. Ran into Tom Smith at Tunes, i love seeing that guy. I bought way too many things. I got the new Bear Vs Shark, the Braid live CD and their DVD, the Jena Berlin CD (I'm thanked in it), and I was going to buy a Kid Dynamite CD but I needed to stop myself. I also got some horrible swing-ska CD for 50 cents becuase I didn't see the "swing" part on it. Barf. After that we came to my house for a bit, watched some ouf the BRaid and Throwdown DVDs at the same time, then got Kristal. Went to PF Chang's where I sat amongst all the tofu and lettuce and was sad, wishing for meat. We went to Kristal's and she gave me the greatest gift of all time: WWF's The Wrestling Album. I need to buy a record player just for this. We watched Weird Science, which surprisingly hold's up very well and was fucking hilarious. Then we got Caroline and went to see War of the Worlds, which I also loved.
Today Shaun picked me up to go to the show in New Brunswick. I told him I had a terrible nightmare that for some reason we missed the show and I said, "Oh well, at least I can still see Bob Nanna tomorrow in Philly." And then in the dream, he died so I never got to see him. Anyway, after we get Kristal and get on the turnpike, Shaun's car overheats and we have to call AAA. I'm keeping my cool though, I know we'll make it. And man, did we make it. The show was supposed to start at 3 and that's about when we got there. Saw this other kid Dan (not me and not Dan P) that was in a class of mine last semester's and wore a Hey Mercedes shirt alot, so I knew who he was here for. Met his friend, some girl that told me she downloaded off of me alot. Then I found out she's this girl from Moorestown, Alana's, roomate and met me at the Rx Bandits show in September. Anyway, the thing didn't even get started until like 5. So we walked around, found NOTHING open, then drove to a Subway. By the time we got back, the first band was playing.
The Silent Years was first. I heard their name about 9 different ways before I saw it on their merch and figured it out. They sound alot like the Dismemberment Plan. I liked them alot. After them was Scream Hello, Dan P's roomate's band. They were okay, just kind rock stuff and I couldn't hear the singer at all. Then, Dan P told us abou the band we "have to see." We were upstairs waiting for Shaun to get out of the bathroom when they started and I said "oh man i think we're missing something fun." So we go downstairs and it was like fucking Saetia started a dance party. I didn't understand this at all. The band was called Make Me and they were all running around screaming while sorority girls were dancing (real dancing, not mosh dancing) and everyone was singing along. I felt like I was the only person who had never heard of these guys because the place was going fucking nuts. The drummer was standing on top of his drums while drumming. I liked them alot. Then there was some two man band that was kind of corny. Shaun and Kristal left to get coffee and I didn't see them again for like two hours. I scared Dan P when he asked where they went, i said they left and that they said he (Dan P) was going to give me a ride home. His face was pretty priceless. Anway, after the lame piano guy finished, the thing that I've been talking about non stop for weeks and have been more excited for than anything this summer finally got started.
Bob Nanna and his new band, the City On Film took the stage. I was right in the front, telling TCNJ Dan and his friend how fucking psyched I was for this. The girl was videotaping the entire thing for her boyfriend that couldn't make the show, that's dedication. Man, there were ALOT of drunk idiots. I'm sure they had fun but they got annoying, especially the dancing kid that ran into everything. But hey, hooray for having fun. THe band did a bunch of their own songs and some covers. Bob was great with the crowd and got them into everything, which I guess isn't hard when they're mostly all drunk. The signalled for people to "hoot an' holler" during the slow parts of a "back home rootin tootin hoe-down" song and got everyone to cheer for him when he did a guitar solo. When it got down to the last two songs, their violonist broke a string, so Bob played Strawberry Ann Switzerland to cover while she changed strings, which was sweet. Then he and the girl played this beautiful slowed down version of A Dozen Roses. It sounded so nice, but sad, with the violin. Then the rest of the band joined in towards the end and it would have been a perfect way to end things. But then they "finished" with a cover of Come On Eileen, one of Bob's favorite songs. I was starting to walk out with everyone else, when the drunk superfans started screaming for one more song. Bob plugged back in, without the band, so I walked back to the front with maybe 10 more people there while he played The Boy Destroyer. I was thrilled, becuase I had heard a bunch of his live sets where he did that and was kind of dissapointed he hadn't played it, so for an encore it was great. Singing along to "Why does every evening have to end this way" was a wonderful feeling. After that he was done, but then one kid shouted "I'll give you 20 bucks to play Stay Six", and without saying anything, Bob went right into it. He messed up one of the guitar parts and laughed and said "I didn't think I was going to play this tonight!" and tried it about 5 times before he was satisfied with it and continued with the song. I'm so glad he finished with that song. Stay Six was track 3 on one of the first mix CDs that Justin Lee made for me in 10th grade. Those CDs led me to listen to the kind of music I listen to now, so Stay Six had a large influence on me. I fucking loved that song. So it was so fitting that he ended with the first Bob Nanna song I ever heard.
I hope I remember this show forever. I'm pretty sure I'm going to go to Philly tomorrow night to see him again.
