THIS WEEKEND RULED
Alright so let's get into it. Saturday I was supposed to go with Leigh Anne to see The City On Film (Bob Nanna) in Delaware. So I was talking to Dan P on myspace about it and he's like "yeah i'm not going because I'm going to see the Penfold reunion tomorrow" and i'm all like "PENFOLD REUNION? WHAAAT?" So he gives me the details.
So text Leigh Anne to see if she wants to see that instead, but she lost her phone and couldn't answer, so I said "Fuck it" and tried to get myself a ticket anyway and would worry about the rest later. So I had to sign up for all these stupid things just to log in, and then when I tried to buy the tickets i'd keep getting some dumb invisible error message. So I went to bed a sad, defeated man.
So I wake up at 8:30 because I have to take a practice GRE test at 10. So I have an IM from LA saying she'll go, so I buy two tickets and it works! So I go and take the GRE and I sucked at it because I haven't done math in 3 years.
Anyway, I come back and take a sweet nap. I wake up and there's an IM from Leigh Anne saying she can't go, so that sucked. But then I was like "Wait, I know exactly who to call." So I give Tom Witherel, Marlton's #1 Penfold fan, a call and say "You want to go see Penfold?" and he's like "WHAT?! NO WAY." Apparantly he found out about the show a week ago but they told him it was sold out and he didn't know how to get tickets. So I get another ticket for Claire and he comes to pick me up and we head to norther Jersey.
But before that my landlords came over for the first time since Danuaryfest, and was also the first time they've bothered to talk to me since Danuaryfest. They gave me a little lecture, but they're glad I'm fixing the house, so they're not mad at me anymore.
Anyway, we go to Penfold. The first band was Killed By The Bull, and I wasn't into them. Then was The Jonah Complex, some ex members of The Assistant. Their between song banter was longer than their songs. Then Outsmarting Simon was next and I definitely liked them. Then was Cordova and they grew on me. Then there was supposed to be a "special Canadian guest band", but after 30 minutes no one had started setting up. So Penfold gets on stage and says it was supposed to be Silverstein, but they weren't going to make it in time to play. I wasn't sweating it because that just meant more Penfold. So Penfold played for a really really long time and it was soooo good. I went up front during "I'll Take You Everywhere" and jumped on stage with everyone during the last part of it. It was incredible and I hope I never forget that moment and that feeling for my entire life. I can't even really put it into words. So they said that was their last song, so Tom wanted to go. I found out they ended up playing Microchip afterwards, so I'm bummed I missed that, but I guess I'm glad they ended with my favorite song. Then I came home and watched my Penfold secret show DVD for the rest of the night and saw Walsh for a bit before going to bed.
Tonight was The City On Film show (BOB NANNA!). So me and Caroline leave to go get Leigh Anne in Philly, an of course we got lost and were super late. We picked her up and got to the place at 7 and doors were at six. Well I guess it's a good thing we were really late becuase no one was going to even start till 8. So the show was at some kids small apartment and we felt awkward sitting there for an hour, so we went to south street to get some food. I ate some of Caroline's weird falafel vegetable thing. I don't know if I liked it or not still. Leigh Anne had the line of the night when Caroline offered her some and she said "Oh no thanks, I don't eat vegetables."
So the show finally gets started around 8. The Felix Culpla played first. They weren't bad or anything, but I just didn't care about them because I wanted to see City On Film.
So City On Film was next and I was really excited like a dork. Every time I see them/him, it's totally different. The first time I saw him, he played with a full band. Then the next time it was just an acoustic guitar and a violin. This time it was just Bob Nanna on acoustic guitar and singing, some bassist with a huge beard, and a girl backup singer/keyboard player. But the keyboard only played drum beats and sound effects and voice clips. So cool. So, all of the songs were like crazy drumbeat remixes of his songs. It was so cool and sad at the same time because I'll never hear those songs like that again. He played Anticlimatic, Pony's Last Trick, Secret Santa Cruz, For Holly, I'd Rather Be Wine Drunk, How A Helicopter Sounds, a new song, A Dozen Roses, and then "closed" with Come On Eileen. And then he played three more songs, of course. He played Strawberry Anne (Switzerland), Stay Six, tried to play some song he didn't really know so he gave up, and then finished with Astray Astray. So so so so good. Everytime I see him play I feel fantastic and talk about it for days afterwards and only listen to his stuff for a week. Everyone's going to be so annoyed with me this week. I loved every second there and wished he would just keep playing.
